Overview

Andrology, the branch of medicine concerned with male sexual and reproductive health, emerged as a specialty at the end of the nineteenth century. However, it was not until the latter half of the past century that andrology had been recognized as one of the most intriguing sub-specialties of human reproduction.

The demand for andrologists and reproductive urologists is increasing but there are insufficient experts to keep pace with the requirement. The scope of modern andrology covers a broad spectrum from genetic studies to assisted reproduction techniques, and there is a clear need for updating healthcare professionals in these aspects.

This preceptorship will offer urologists, gynecologists, embryologists, andrologists and scientists working in ART an opportunity to learn the tools to implement reproductive andrology in a Fertility Center. The participants will be guided by international experts through lectures, debates and interactive discussions. Apart from providing new insights into male infertility, this educational activity will give a guided journey through a modern centre specialised in male reproductive health.

Learning Objectives

Target Audience

The program is intended for clinicians, embryologists, andrologists, scientists, and managers working in ART who wish to update their knowledge of advanced techniques and scientific innovations and understand best practices using evidence-based models of care.

· Susannah Copland ·

Dr. Copland pursued an undergraduate education in agricultural and biological engineering as a stepping-stone to medicine. She graduated from Cornell with honors and distinction eager to apply the problem-solving rigor of engineering training to medical education, receiving a full scholarship to the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine.

She went on to complete her obstetrics and gynecology training at the Magee-Women’s Hospital in Pittsburgh and her Reproductive Endocrinology fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, where she also completed a Master of Science in Clinical Research. Her ultimate career choices, leading her to become an infertility specialist, were influenced by her affinity for solving complex problems and a desire to develop long-term relationships with her patients.

After fellowship, she was recruited by the Duke University Division of Reproductive Endocrinology to oversee clinical research and to direct the fertility preservation and third party reproduction programs, which she did for five years. While enjoying academic practice, she partnered with David Walmer to found Atlantic Reproductive to provide personalized patient care in a welcoming independent practice.

Susannah learned the value of hard work, perseverance, and family early in life from her parents, who were the first generation to complete higher education and go on to accomplish careers in the humanities and sciences. When Susannah was six, the choirmaster at St. Andrew’s in Cherry Hinton near Cambridge, England recommended that her parents support her education in music, recognizing that she had remarkable musical abilities. After years of musical training in vocal performance and cello, culminating in training with the principal cellists of both the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, she decided to make medical science her profession, while continuing her lifelong passion for music as an amateur. That passion now includes duets at home with her children.

· Mary Peavey ·

Dr. Mary Peavey began her undergraduate education at Duke, intending to study physics. When entrance exams placed her out of freshman physics, she enrolled in a biology course that won her interest in applied life sciences. She graduated with honors, having completed a major in biology and minors in neurobiology, chemistry, and religion. During an elective clinical Neurology rotation, the healing partnership witnessed between physicians & patients affirmed her decision to pursue medicine. Returning to Texas for medical education at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, she found that working on Lame Deer Indian Reservation drew her focus to women’s health.

Dr. Peavey returned to Duke for her obstetrics and gynecology residency, where she worked with Drs. Walmer & Copland during her Reproductive Endocrinology & Fertility rotation. She went on to complete her Reproductive Endocrinology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine, where she also completed a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation. Choosing a career as a fertility specialist allows her to combine her love for science and “walking paths with people,” as she describes her collaborative connection with her patients.

After fellowship, she was recruited by the UNC Division of Reproductive Endocrinology where she directed both the Fertility Preservation & the Residency Rotation Programs. During her four years at UNC, Dr. Peavey mentored residents & fellows, collaborating on clinical research projects that resulted in multiple national presentations, peer-reviewed publications, and her first textbook, all while contributing to a busy clinical practice. While she enjoyed excelling in an academic practice, she joined Atlantic Reproductive to fully dedicate her talents and joys in mentorship and collaboration toward providing patient-centered care, “growing together” with patients on the path to building their families.

· Rita Laursen ·

Rita Jakubcionyte  Laursen is educated as an obstetrician/gynecologist in Lithuania, where I was also born and raised. I have worked in Lithuania as a specialist in obstetrics/gynecology at the University hospital in Kaunas (Lithuania), and in the period 2003-2005 also as head of Department in child and adolescent gynecology at the same hospital. In 2000, I defended my Ph.D. thesis ”Determinants for induced abortion in Lithuania”. At that time I started interested in fertility treatment and also worked at a private fertility clinic in Kaunas.

In 2005, I decided to continue my career in Denmark and was employed as a substitute physician at the obstetrics/gynecology department in Sønderborg. Based on my great interest in infertility treatment, I applied for a position as a medical doctor at the Fertility Clinic in Skive and was hired in 2006. Gradually I was trained in all forms of infertility treatment, have actively participated in all courses and congresses within the professional area, became involved in research projects that have taken place at the clinic.

Based on the general lack of knowledge about the causes of male infertility in Danmark, I chose to focus on investigating male infertility. Since 2015, the clinic has offered males with severely reduced sperm quality medical treatment with gonadotropins. This resulted in two recent professional publications which were published in international journals.  I am also a member of European Academy of Andrology.
