Overview

The workshop and its complementary activities will focus on the real-world application of evidence, guidelines and management systems, to improve the diagnosis, treatment and support of patients seeking MAR. After reviewing the evidence, delegates will evaluate markers of infertility and select responses they perceive important to specific situations. They will also learn about the value of expert opinion and debate in relation to current research and evidence-based medicine. Measures of success will be discussed that support patient engagement, development of individualized treatment plans and support best practice. The ultimate goal of the workshop is for fertility nurses and midwives to promote patient-centred care, through the delivery of holistic, advanced fertility nursing/midwifery practice.

Demand for MAR is increasing, globally, in part due to the continued worldwide decline in female and male fertility and advancing female age at first pregnancy. While advances in MAR have created scope and diversity in treatment options, novel processes, both evidence and non-evidence based, have also increased patient expectations. Processes or treatment ‘add-ons’ lacking such evidence include: medications, investigations, equipment, alternative therapies, laboratory procedures and surgical interventions, all of which aim to enhance pregnancy and live birth rates in addition to reducing the risk of miscarriage. It is therefore essential that nurses and midwives understand the clinical and physiological rationale for treatment ‘add-ons’, including the intended effects, risks and side-effects. According to the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA), where there is no evidence to support safety and efficacy of treatment ‘add-ons’, they should only be offered in a research setting with full ethics approval. Nevertheless, due to limited global government funding of fertility services, the private sector has experienced increased demand, which has influenced marketing, driven online patient and professional communication and social media, subsequently leading to increased patient expectations of fertility services.

This webinar will therefore enhance our understanding of treatment ‘add-on’s’, thus enabling effective communication and informed decision-making.
